Boikatta is a 43 ha property situated in the beautiful Northern Rivers region of NSW, featuring grazing land, a perennial creek and native forest.

Livestock & pasture improvement

Once part of a larger land holding, Boikatta has been used to graze cattle for over 50 years.

Following the subdivision, the lack of infrastructure created an opportunity to maintain traditional beef cattle farming while embracing modern practices with a focus on productivity and sustainability. Since acquiring the property in April 2023, a risk-based approach to weed management has been implemented, resulting in a pasture yield increase of over 10% while cattle continue to graze.

The property's fencing was in poor condition, allowing livestock from neighbouring farms to enter. To address this, 2km of new fencing will be installed by 2025 to secure significant portions of the property.

Forestry and restoring native vegetation

Before the planting of over 1,000 trees over the next 5 years, significant riparian rehabilitation has commenced.

To meet the growing demand for using timber that has been locally sourced using sustainable practices, whilst minimising the carbon footprint of transportation, Boikatta is ideally located on what was once a subtropical lowland rainforest. Species such as Red Cedar, White Booyong, Silver Ash, Teak, Rosewood and Quandong are endemic to the area and attract high prices for furniture-grade timbers.

The plantation will be a long-term, sustainable operation that will function over many years. As mature trees are harvested, new trees are planted.

Removal of invasive species and replanting indigenous vegetation is underway to reduce erosion and encourage native wildlife.
